People choose gemstones for a variety of reasons. For some, it’s because they’re after a particular colour of stone to match something, for others it’s because gemstones have particular properties or characteristics and they choose the stone because it matches them or they want to develop the characteristics of the stone. Gemstones are also great gifts and choosing a stone with a particular meaning for a friend or the stone that matches their birth month can go a long way. Find out more about birthstones on wiki.
When you buy a piece of jewellery from me I provide a card with a brief outline of the stones’ properties but I’m learning that there’s so much more interesting information about the stones. Any stone that is not a Diamond, Sapphire, Ruby or Emerald is a semi-precious gemstone and the quality of these stones can vary greatly. I’m learning that a good quality stone has more clarity and as they cost more are more commonly used in smaller pieces of jewellery such as rings and earrings. The cut and depth of colour also contribute to the quality of the stone.
As many of you know I've only been making my jewellery for a little over a year so I'm learning all the time, please feel free to share your gemstone resources and pointers with me and others.
